Mercer AI Strategy | Think • Build • Orchestrate

Mercer University AI Strategy

Think.
Build.
Orchestrate.

A capability progression for moving from effective individual use of AI to reusable solutions and, ultimately, durable institutional capabilities.

The model

AI maturity is about capability, not products.

Technologies will evolve, but Mercer’s commitment is to these enduring capabilities.

THINK
Individual capability

Use AI confidently to improve teaching, learning, research, analysis, communication, and everyday productivity.

BUILD
Reusable solution

Turn repeated work or unmet needs into assistants, applications, automations, prototypes, and other reusable tools.

ORCHESTRATE
Institutional capability

Connect AI, approved data, university systems, governance, and human review into repeatable institutional workflows.

One example from beginning to end

From a faculty syllabus to an institutional course-support capability.

The same problem looks very different as Mercer moves from individual AI use to reusable applications and then to a governed institutional workflow.

01 · Think with AI

THINK

Outcome: AI literacy + productivity

A faculty member uses AI as an intelligent collaborator.

The faculty member uploads a draft syllabus to Amplify AI and asks the system to help improve the course.

For example, the faculty member might ask:

  • Is my syllabus accessible and easy for students to navigate?
  • Are my learning outcomes measurable?
  • Where could I improve clarity or remove ambiguity?
  • Generate discussion questions aligned with the learning outcomes.
  • Suggest assignments or assessments aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy.

The faculty member reviews the recommendations, exercises academic judgment, and decides what to use.

Capability developed: AI-assisted teaching and course design. The immediate benefit is better individual work and greater productivity.
02 · Build with AI

BUILD

Outcome: applications + prototypes

Mercer turns repeated work into a reusable solution.

CTL notices that faculty members repeatedly ask AI to perform many of the same course-preparation tasks.

Rather than requiring every faculty member to recreate those prompts, an instructional designer or developer builds a reusable syllabus-support application.

A faculty member could upload a syllabus and automatically receive:

  • An accessibility review.
  • Course design and Quality Matters recommendations.
  • A review of learning outcomes and alignment.
  • A draft set of student FAQs.
  • Suggested discussion prompts and learning activities.
  • A configuration for a course-specific AI assistant.

Instead of faculty recreating the same prompts each time, Mercer now has a reusable course-preparation tool.

Capability developed: a reusable instructional application.
03 · Orchestrate with AI

ORCHESTRATE

Outcome: durable institutional capability

The application becomes part of a governed Mercer workflow.

AI, university systems, approved data, governance, and human review work together.

When a syllabus is finalized, the institutional workflow could:

  1. Recognize that the faculty member has uploaded or finalized the syllabus in the approved course environment.
  2. Analyze the syllabus using Mercer’s approved AI services.
  3. Run accessibility and course-readiness checks.
  4. Generate a course-specific AI assistant configuration.
  5. Create student FAQs and instructional support materials.
  6. Store approved metadata or outputs in the appropriate university system.
  7. Send the faculty member a readiness report for review and approval.
  8. Make approved resources available to students when the course opens.

No individual faculty member has to reconstruct the entire process from scratch. The workflow is repeatable, governed, reviewable, and supported by Mercer.

Capability developed: an institutional course-support service that can continue creating value across courses and semesters.
Why the progression matters

The value changes at each stage.

THINK

Improves the quality and productivity of individual work.

BUILD

Turns repeated work into reusable applications and solutions.

ORCHESTRATE

Connects those solutions to institutional systems and processes so the capability lasts.

Technologies will evolve, but Mercer’s commitment is to these enduring capabilities.
