Canvas Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start using Canvas?
Canvas is available now to Mercer faculty. Your courses and students are already populated in the system.

Where do I log into Canvas?
Login to Canvas at http://canvas.mercer.edu

What is my username/password for Canvas?
Your Canvas login credentials are the same as your Mercer credentials.

Does Canvas offer plagiarism detection software options?
Canvas does not have a built in function like Blackboard's Safe Assign, but integrates with 3rd party solutions. We are piloting Vericite in Summer 2017.

Does Canvas have mobile apps?

Canvas is the only LMS that offers mobile options so comprehensive that a student can take and complete an entire course on a mobile device. Canvas offers a free student and teacher app available in the App Store and Google Play store. The apps can be searched by using Canvas by Instructure.

Will my Blackboard and Moodle courses go away?

Mercer maintains archived copies of your courses in Blackboard and Moodle. When these contracts expire, your course content will be archived separately and you will be able to access them through Academic Computing. It is always a good idea to backup your online course content by downloading your course files each semester.

What services are integrated with Canvas?
Currently, the following services are integrated or are in the process of being integrated with Mercer's implementation of Canvas, although not all of them are campus-wide.

  • Google Drive/Docs (apps)
  • Dropbox
  • Turnitin
  • Echo360
  • Respondus
  • Softchalk
  • Examity
  • LiveText
  • Starfish
  • My CoursEval
  • Examsoft
  • Webex
  • ProctorU

Publisher accounts can also be integrated by faculty members within their courses. If you have a course homework account with Pearson or Cengage, for example, you can "add" that publisher to your course and students can navigate to it via Canvas. Ask us for help.

How do students and faculty get help in Canvas?
Please contact the Helpdesk at #2922 or email at helpdesk@mercer.edu.

What are my web conferencing options?

Mercer uses Webex as a web conferencing provider. You can access Webex at https://mercer.webex.com/ and login using your Mercer credentials. For quick-start help with Webex, see this one-page guide. For use on a tablet or phone, download the free Webex app in the Apple or Google Play stores.
